DBI technology

Environmental concern has become one of the primary drivers of change in the maritime industry. Rising regulatory requirements, the drive to reduce emissions, and the development of electric and hybrid propulsion systems mean that every kilogram of onboard equipment carries real significance today. In response to these challenges, DBI technology was developed—a solution that enables the replacement of heavy copper cables with lighter aluminum conductors.

DBI technology is a solution that offers a range of benefits for manufacturers and owners of vessels from cost optimization and increased fleet durability in operational conditions to increased cargo capacity. Instead of heavy copper cables that add weight to the fleet, lighter aluminum cables are used, offered as a set with specialized fittings and tools.

Advantages of DBI Technology

The solution was developed with a focus on weight reduction and optimization, translating into tangible operational benefits—ranging from optimized costs and fuel consumption to increased vessel payload capacity. The system holds DNV certification, confirming its compliance with rigorous industry standards.

The technology has undergone comprehensive testing to assess its performance under conditions encountered during daily operation. Its resistance to thermal shock and heating cycles, vibration, and tensile loads—as well as its behavior under short-circuit conditions—has been verified. Tests were also conducted to assess its resistance to salt spray, water ingress, and fluctuating temperatures and humidity, thereby confirming the system’s reliability even in the most demanding operating environments.

What does the system include:

  • Flexible aluminum cable
  • MTR copper terminal (cross-sections: DBI 95-12, DBI 120-12, DBI 150-12)
  • SH450JCM crimping head (included with a storage case and space for dedicated dies)
  • pompa SVEPT20-520JCM (pakowana w walizkę)
  • Hydraulic hose for connecting the pump to the SF30J MTR head.

Users of DBI technology (selected projects):

Olympic Bibby

  • The primary reason for the trial installation was to gain experience with cables and connections in harsh environments (the North Sea), where the vessel held a three-year contract.

Olympic Artemis

  • In 2015, 3,000 meters of 3×150 EMC VFD cable were installed on the *Olympic Shipping* vessel, which had been at sea for five years.

5 Car Ferries – Fjord1 Shipyard

  • Converting the vessels to hybrid propulsion was made possible by the installation of 5,000 meters of cable on each ferry.

Bröderne AA Shipyard Electric Excursion Ferry

  • In 2019, 1,400 meters of cable were installed on an aluminum electric excursion ferry.
